If you've come across the letters "RDHAP" and weren't sure what they meant, you're not alone. It's one of the more specialized credentials in dentistry, and most people only encounter it when they start looking into mobile or in-home dental hygiene care.

RDHAP stands for Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice. It's a California-specific license that allows a dental hygienist to provide preventive dental hygiene services (cleanings, oral health assessments, and hygiene instruction) directly to patients in settings outside a traditional dental office, without requiring a dentist to be on-site or to have examined the patient first.

Why that distinction matters

A standard Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) typically works under a dentist's supervision, inside a dental office. An RDHAP has completed additional education, clinical hours, and a separate state licensing process specifically so they can bring hygiene care to patients who otherwise wouldn't get it easily: people in their own homes, in assisted living, in skilled nursing facilities, or anywhere a traditional office visit isn't realistic.

What an RDHAP Does and Doesn't Do

An RDHAP provides the preventive side of dental care: cleanings, gum health assessments, hygiene education, and identifying issues that need further attention. What an RDHAP does not do is diagnose dental disease, perform restorative work like fillings, or replace a dentist. If a mobile hygiene visit turns up something that needs treatment, the RDHAP's role is to refer the patient to a local dentist, not to treat it directly.
